SALARY: $19.31 - $24.46, Undergraduate Level
This position is expected to work an average of 20-30 hours per week. The anticipated duration of this internship is approximately 6 to 12 months, but may end earlier or be extended depending on department needs.
Duties & Responsibilities
• Conducts research on collections, exhibitions or related topics, prepares and presents reports, and provides recommendations
• Assists with organizing and maintaining museum collections, including data entry, collections care, object photography, and condition reporting
• Assists in emergency response and collection evacuation, as needed
• Develops and prepares materials, including inventories, graphics, and educational handouts
• Assists in the development of educational programs, website and social media content, and special events
• Assists with the development of Museum manuals and training materials
• Presents public education programming in collaboration with other City staff
• Provides support for public events
• Assists with museum tours for the general public and school groups, as needed
• Establishes positive working relationships with City employees, outside agencies, and the public
• May provide administrative and project support, as needed
Education and Experience
If you are currently an undergraduate student or recent graduate studying Museum Studies, History, Art History, or a related field, and are interested in gaining meaningful hands-on work experience at the local government level, this opportunity may be for you.
Knowledge and Abilities
• Possesses strong verbal and written communication abilities capable of conveying information accurately, clearly, concisely, and effectively to a variety of audiences
• General understanding of museum operations and professional best practices for the care and handling of museum collections
• Knowledge of research techniques, survey methods, data collection, and analysis
• Ability to create engaging and creative social media content
• Ability to present programs and tours confidently, accurately, and enthusiastically
• Ability to foster effective working relationships with all levels of staff and the community
• Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain accurate records, ensuring all work is completed thoroughly and professionally
• Demonstrates strong customer service skills and the ability to provide program information and respond to public inquiries and requests
• Strong computer skills and the ability to use Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, and other computer programs to generate spreadsheets, presentations, and reports
• Ability to lift, drag, and push files, paper, and documents weighing up to 25 pounds
