Job Description


Reporting to the Vice President for Facilities, Development & Management, the Director Risk Management Environmental Health & Safety’s primary responsibility is to provide and promote a safe and secure environment on the CalArts’ campus. Responsibilities include administering, planning and implementing institute environmental health and safety programs, policies and procedures, as well as, monitoring critical emergency and disaster preparedness planning and training. This position is responsible for ensuring compliance with federal, state and local laws and regulations.


  • Identify, evaluate and document environmental health and safety risks and hazards throughout the Institute and take appropriate action to ensure unsafe conditions are corrected in a timely manner.
  • Prepare, maintain and monitor department records, programs and reports that pertain to environmental health and safety as required by law.
  • Manage and maintain day-to-day health and safety programs, auditing and regulatory recordkeeping and reporting; document and investigate all incidents of property damage, personal injury, safety violations, unsafe conditions and non-compliance activities.
  • Coordinate vendors and/or establish protocols and guidelines to address and find solutions for environmental health or safety issues impacting students, faculty and staff.
  • Conduct and/or coordinate with Fire Department all fire inspections, performance permits and annual fire system testing. Collaborate with facilities maintenance to prevent violations of the fire code.
  • Renew and/or obtain permits required by local and state agencies as necessary.
  • Coordinate training as necessary for CPR, First Aid, AED, Fire Extinguisher, GHS, Lock out Tag Out, Forklift, Driver and other training as regulated.
  • Assist with the management, revisions, implementation and training of the emergency operations plan and polices; including business continuity plans.
  • Conduct training of faculty and staff on safety practices, fire prevention, proper handling of hazardous material and equipment, including managing and updating safety data sheets.
  • Develop a plan and timeline for the removal of asbestos from campus buildings. Document abatement and maintain records.
  • Work with the institute 504 Coordinator in reviewing and addressing student safety plans and compliance with American’s with Disabilities Act.
  • Takes a leadership role in construction related to safety. Participates in construction planning meetings and design guidance.


  • Capable of dealing tactfully and courteously with students, employees, and other persons using the College facilities.
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of environmental & occupational health and safety.
  • Must be a strategic thinker with the ability to exercise good judgment, collect and analyze data, define problems, and recommend solutions.
  • Certified in First Aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and automated external defibrillator (AED).
  • Effective oral and written communications.
  • Full knowledge and understanding of all local, state requirements, including Cal OSHA, EPA and NFPA.


  • Experience in academic institutional safety
  • Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Associated Risk Management (ARM) or American Society of Safety Engineers (ASSE) members preferred
  • Computer skill on PC software
  • Ability to read architectural design prints
  • AutoCAD or map making software experience a plus


  • Graduation from an accredited college or university with a bachelor’s degree in occupational safety/health or related field, or significant work experience with increasing responsibility will be considered.


  • Minimum experience of 5 years in the environmental health and safety field.
