The City of Santa Clarita is recruiting for multiple part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) Recreation Leaders in the Recreation and Community Services division. Based out of William S. Hart Park, these positions play a key role in delivering high-quality outdoor recreation programs and events to residents of the Santa Clarita Valley. Under the supervision of the Recreation and Community Services Coordinator and Supervisor, Recreation Leaders will help create a safe, engaging, and enjoyable environment for participants of all ages.
These positions are anticipated to work an average of 19 hours and various hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays throughout the year.
RECREATION LEADER I:
$17.38 - $18.44 per hour
Duties and Responsibilities
• Assists in the implementation of programs, activities, camps, and events
• Provides customer service to program participants and the general public, including responding to public inquiries, emails, phone calls, and on-site assistance as needed
• Assists in maintaining and updating notebooks and files
• Assists in the organization, set-up, and clean-up of facilities and program areas at William S. Hart Park, including Hart Hall, picnic areas, and campgrounds, in addition to the Bike Park of Santa Clarita, City parks, and open spaces and trails
• Provides support for animals, including feeding, cleaning of enclosures, and disposing of waste
• Conducts participant headcounts and attendance tracking for activities and events
• Inventories and organizes supplies and equipment for program participants, staff, and volunteers
• Utilizes registration software to process registrations and add programs
• Ensures safety of site in accordance with emergency procedures and reports incidents/accidents; follows and enforces City policies
• Organizes, prioritizes, and follows up on work assignments to meet required deadlines
• Communicates effectively with City staff and members of the public
• Attends meetings and training sessions as required
• Performs other duties as directed by the Recreation and Community Services Supervisor or Recreation and Community Services Coordinator
Education and Experience:
• High school graduate or GED equivalent
• Six months of experience (paid or volunteer) in recreation, outdoor education, camps, community programming, or related fields
RECREATION LEADER II:
$18.68 - $19.82 per hour
Recreation Leader II includes all of the responsibilities of the Recreation Leader I, in addition to the following:
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Responsible for money-handling, including payments, close-out procedures, and refunds
• Operates City vehicles to transport equipment and travel to program sites, including the Bike Park of Santa Clarita, trails around the City, and other outdoor recreation locations
• Oversees site opening and/or closing procedures
• Provides training and mentorship to Recreation Leader I staff and volunteers on standard procedures
• Serve as the point of contact for onsite coordination when the Supervisor and Coordinator are offsite
• Inspects and reports maintenance or safety issues in the parks, trails, and facilities
Education and Experience
• High school graduate or GED equivalent
• Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license and a safe driving record is required
• One year of experience in recreation, outdoor education, camps, community programming, or related fields
• Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered
RECREATION LEADER III:
$20.82 - $22.09 per hour
Recreation Leader III includes all of the responsibilities of the Recreation Leader I and II, in addition to the following:
Duties and Responsibilities:
• Assists with planning and coordination of programs, including Youth Outdoor Adventures, Community Hikes, Mountain Bike Demo Days, Volunteer Workdays, Agents of Discovery, Hiking Challenge, Open Space Disc Golf Tournaments, Barnyard Tours, and campground activities and events
• Creates and prepares marketing content for a variety of platforms, including social media content, flyers, and more, as well as captures photos and videos of programs at various locations
• Supervises Recreation Leader I and II staff during program implementation and provides real-time coaching
• Assists with logistics and timelines with vendors, contractors, or community partners
Education and Experience:
• High school graduate or GED equivalent
• Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license and a safe driving record is required
• Two years of experience in recreation, outdoor education, camps, community programming, or related fields
• Any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered
Knowledge and Abilities
• Knowledge of recreation and outdoor recreation programming
• Knowledge of computer systems; specifically, Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint
• Ability to effectively deliver customer service and handle conflict
• Ability to lead staff to provide quality recreation programs
• Ability to follow and enforce City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others
• Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and positively, both orally and in writing
• Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner
• Ability to lead and be a strong team member, and work both independently and as part of a work group
• Ability to perform general office duties relevant to the program
• Ability to prepare content for marketing and use relevant equipment, software, and social media platforms
• Ability to drive a vehicle and travel to various City facilities as needed
• Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions, including inclement weather
• Ability to lift, drag, push files, paper, documents, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds may be required; position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, etc.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.
PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 1,000 hours.
