Description/Duties and Responsibilities

The City of Santa Clarita is recruiting for multiple part-time, temporary, seasonal (PTS) Recreation Leader IIs and IIs to work directly with the Adult Sports and Gymnasium Recreation Programs. Under the supervision of the Recreation Coordinator or Supervisor Program Specialist, this position will provide residents of the Santa Clarita Valley with a variety of quality recreational programs and events in a safe and fun environment.

This position may work up to 20 hours per week and requires the ability to work various hours that will require weekends, evenings, and some holidays.

Adult Sports programming hours run Monday–Friday from 4:00 – 10:30 p.m. and/or Sundays all day. The Gymnasium operates Monday – Saturday 7:30 a.m. – 9:30 p.m. and Sundays 7:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m.

Recreation Leader II

$18.68 - $19.82 per hour

Duties and Responsibilities:

• Oversees opening and closing procedures; prepares facilities for use; assists in the organization, set-up, break-down, and clean-up of a variety of facilities and fields

• Assists in the coordination of Adult Sport programs, leagues, and events, including the Adult Sports Softball program, which operates Monday-Friday and Sunday, 10 months of the year.

• Provides customer service to program participants and the general public; this may include responding to public inquiries, supplying accurate information, and fulfilling customer needs over the phone, through e-mail, and on-site at City facilities

• Completes and reviews incident and accident reports

• Creates and maintains notebooks and files for various programs

• Handles monetary transactions, including accepting payments, following close-out procedures, and managing refunds

• Tracks and maintains program calendars, site reservations, and program participation

• Reviews materials for use on the website, brochures, and flyers, and makes suggestions for revisions

• Uses registration software to process registrations and produce membership cards

• Ensures safety of parks and maintains awareness of emergency procedures; responds to emergencies and performs First Aid as needed

• Performs a wide variety of office duties, including ordering supplies, filing, and organizing

• Follows and enforces City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others

• Operates City vehicles to drive to various locations throughout the City

• Attends meetings and training sessions

• Assists with the operation of other program areas, such as Aquatics and Outdoor Recreation, as requested

• Performs other duties and activities as directed by the Recreation and Community Services Supervisor, Coordinator, or Program Specialist

Education and Experience:

• High School Diploma or GED or equivalent

• Valid Class C California Driver's License or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation to carry out job-related essential functions may be required

• One year of experience in the field of recreation, including sports programming and facility operations, customer service, or other related field

• Possession of, or ability to obtain within 3 months of hire, Adult and Pediatric CPR/AED/First Aid certifications

• A combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities will be considered

 

Recreation Leader III

$20.82 - $22.09 per hour

Recreation Leader III includes all of the responsibilities of the Recreation Leader I, in addition to the following:

Duties and Responsibilities

• Actively participates in the coordination and delivery of programs, leagues, and events

• Leads the operations, set-up, and clean-up of sports facilities and programs

• Leads staff during program implementation by providing clear direction and support; serves as the point of contact for onsite coordination and resolving conflicts

• Inventories and organizes supplies and equipment bags for staff, coaches, and team managers

Education and Experience

• High school graduate or GED equivalent

• Possession of a valid Class C California driver’s license or the ability to utilize an alternative method of transportation to carry out job-related essential functions may be required

• Two years of experience working in recreation, customer service, clerical support, sports programming, or other related setting

Knowledge and Abilities

• Knowledge of recreation, adult, and youth sports programming

• Strong customer service skills and the ability to handle conflict, issues, and concerns with youth, teens, and parents

• Ability to communicate effectively, tactfully, and positively, both verbally and in writing

• Ability to organize and prioritize a variety of tasks in an effective and timely manner, for self and others

• Knowledge of computer systems, specifically Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint, and the ability to learn the City's registration software system

• Strong work ethic, proactive, and the ability to learn quickly

• Ability to manage fiscal duties responsibly

• Ability to make sound decisions within established guidelines and be a creative problem solver

• Ability to lead a team, be a strong team member, and work both independently and as part of a work group to effectively provide quality recreation programs

• Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships

• Ability to observe safety principles and work in a safe manner

• Ability to follow and enforce City policies as they relate to the health, behavior, and safety of others

• Ability to perform general office duties relevant to the program

• Ability to operate a golf cart or John Deere Gator

• Ability to lift, drag, push files, paper, documents, and equipment weighing up to 25 pounds may be required; position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, etc.

In addition, part-time, temporary, and seasonal (PTS) employees may be required to participate in the DMV Employer Pull-Notice Program. This program authorizes the City to receive a driver record report upon enrollment and during employment.

This is not a designated Retired Annuitant position. If you are a California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) retiree, you may be required to reinstate into CalPERS.

PTS workers are at-will. Generally, PTS employees are limited to no more than 999 hours.
